Lucky Daye's ALOUD! Is Urban Radio's Album of the Week

Some albums arrive quietly. Lucky Daye's ALOUD! did not. The 15-track project landed October 16 on Warner Records, his first album with the label after the Keep Cool and RCA years, and it plays like a man done asking for permission. The title says it all: the tension between "allowed" and "aloud." Daye decided to live the second one. Urban radio — and Dagr8fm — is all the way locked in.

## From "Allowed" to "Aloud": The Story Behind the Title

Lucky Daye conceived ALOUD! during an unexpected sabbatical in Brazil, and the distance gave him clarity. "I used to think I wasn't allowed to do a lot of what I wanted, but I realized I had to allow myself to live ALOUD!" he says. "Don't let anybody silence you or tell you who you're supposed to be. Say what you want, move how you want, and dance your way through the hard times."

That's not a marketing slogan — it's the story of David Debrandon Brown. Born in New Orleans and raised in a religious household where secular music was largely off-limits, he learned melody through church hymns, then rebuilt himself in Atlanta after Hurricane Katrina displaced his family. The long road ran through his debut Painted (2019), the EP Table for Two (which won the 2022 Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album), Candydrip (2022, home of his first Billboard Hot 100 entry "Over") and Algorithm (2024, nominated for Best R&B Album, with "That's You" winning Best Traditional R&B Performance at the 2025 Grammys). Along the way he wrote hits for Ne-Yo, Ella Mai, Trey Songz, Mary J. Blige and even Beyoncé's Renaissance. Two Grammy wins later, he's betting on himself again with a new label and his boldest sound yet.

## The Collaborators: Leon Thomas, Muni Long and Pusha T

The guest list on ALOUD! reads like a summit of modern R&B. "Fly U Out" reunites Daye with longtime collaborator Leon Thomas for a sultry, slow-burning duet. "Knockin," featuring Muni Long and The Paradox, flips the script entirely — a gritty, rock-influenced battle of the sexes where Lucky plays the charming instigator and Muni plays the woman fed up. Then there's "Mouf Say" with Pusha T, a seductive, jazz-inflected slow burn with slinky saxophone lines that one reviewer called "Careless Whisper-level seduction" — Pusha opens like a prosecutor reading a case file before Lucky glides in over a clean snap beat. Akeem Ali rounds out the features, with longtime collaborator D'Mile leading production.

Daye says this album had more collaborators than any he's made, because he finally worked on his own clock. "I worked on my own time. If they weren't on my time, it wasn't happening," he explains. "I passively control it, passively. I don't have the energy to argue in a space of creativity."

## The Singles: "Nowhere Fast," "Talk To Me" and "Down"

The rollout gave us three strong entry points. "Nowhere Fast" — built around a Rihanna sample — has already climbed into the Top 10 at R&B radio in the U.S. "Talk To Me" is the standout single, all manic electric guitar riffs and 80s vibrancy. And "Down" brings rumbling trap drums and heavy synths that press on the track like a hand on your chest. To celebrate the release, Lucky took the stage at GRAMMY Museum Presents: The Drop for a special performance and an intimate conversation with media personality Gia Peppers — further proof this album is being treated like an event, not just a drop.

## A Win for Independent Artists

Here's why ALOUD! belongs on Dagr8fm, the home of independent artists. The whole project is a case study in self-permission: a New Orleans kid who grew up without secular music, lost everything to a hurricane, wrote his way into the industry's biggest rooms, won two Grammys — and still had to learn to stop waiting for approval. That message lands hard in Miami's hip hop and urban music scene, where artists build movements out of nothing every single day. You don't need the industry's permission to be great. You need the work, the vision and the courage to live aloud.
